I’ll use an old metaphor to begin; LIFE IS A BUMPY ROAD. Days, weeks, months and even years go by with nothing but good feelings. Then suddenly something bad happens. Someone you know and maybe love has some severe medical issues, you wreck your car, you have a fire occur at your home…oh my, this list could get very long! These are the feelings we do not enjoy and try to avoid if at all possible. I feel as if I have enjoyed a charmed life, with many fantastic memories to support that. I have never been to war, not spent too many days hungry and stayed relatively healthy.
What occurred to me this morning while lying in bed, was what I will call, the good feeling. These are the feelings that creep up on us out of nowhere when we least expect them. You get a warm fuzzy feeling in your body, and you almost feel as if you are glowing. These fantastic feelings have an amazing impact on your wellbeing. One of my favorite feelings is warm, secure hug. For me, this is one of those special moments that do not announce themselves but drop in out of the blue when you least expect them. Although most of the truly fantastic feelings are with people, sometimes they can occur in less likely situations. Sometimes when I am riding my bike and I reach a goal or climb a mountain quicker than normal, I get one of these feelings. Occasionally, I will see a fellow human do something outstanding for another which creates one of these special events. Several weeks ago, I was standing in line at the local Food Lion, and an older lady was checking out in front of me. She did not have enough money to pay for her groceries. The cashier, who I know, reached into his pocket, pulled out his own personal credit card and paid the difference. That was one of those special moments for me.
I think we all have these amazing events and look forward to them. While writing this it has occurred to me that if more people spent time and effort helping others feel these special moments, then we would make the world a better place to live.
